It was impulse and need that made Jordache drive straight up the M5 to Cheltenham

"Ash!" there was surprise and pleasure in Diana's voice as Jordache rather self-consciously walked into the bookshop and felt the warmth of Diana's arms round her shoulders.

They sat drinking coffee and Jordache relaxed in the comfort of friendship as she talked of old time and Mell.

"The holiday!" Diana queried and Jordache told her of Frances and poetry and pain. Diana listened without comment and then when Jordache paused said softly.

"Frances, is fragile she has a deep wounds but she sounds someone Mell would have liked."

Sam prepared a simple lunch and Jordache refused their offer to spend the night.

"I just wanted to see you…old times and old friends…"she stopped and shrugged her shoulders.

"Bring Frances down to a poetry evening," Sam said as she handed Jordache a cigarette and then seeing Jordache's frown added, "Look Ash, Mell wanted you to have a life, not to grieve forever. It isn't disloyalty…"

"Frances isn't gay."

"So bring her as a friend…!"

"I don't think we'll meet up again," Jordache said as she walked out of the book shop.

"Oh Ash…you can't win if you don't play!" Sam gave a faint smile as Diana murmured.

"Sam.” remonstratively.

"But don't hurt forever…Ash."
